Alcohol Addiction

Using a Body Detoxification to Get Drug Toxins Out of Your Body for Good

When getting help with your drug addiction through a detoxification program, you might discover that one component of the program is to actually take steps to remove all toxins from your body. Traditionally, a detox program is thought of as simply a program that helps you get through the physical withdrawals associated with drug abuse. In this sense, your body is “detoxified” after you haven’t taken the drugs for a certain period of time. In reality, toxins from the drugs you put in your body can stay in your system for a very long time. For this reason, more and more detox programs are looking at ways to further detoxify the body.

Dietary Changes in a Detoxification Program

One way that a detoxification program can work toward actually detoxifying the body is to make dietary changes. In order to accomplish this, you will need to take a holistic approach toward your body and your diet.

As a part of a body detoxification program, you will first need to be sure to include plenty of fiber in your diet. You can accomplish this by eating fresh vegetables and fruit and brown rice. Foods such as artichokes, beets, broccoli, cabbage, chlorella, radishes, seaweed, and spirulina are particularly high in fiber and make good additions to a body detox program.

Since the liver is particularly abused when drugs are taken, a body detoxification program should also involve taking specific steps to protect and cleanse this important organ. Certain herbs are particularly beneficial for cleansing and protecting the liver, including burdock, dandelion root, green tea, and milk thistle. Vitamin C also helps cleanse the liver because it stimulates the body into producing glutathione, which helps drive toxins away from the liver.

Drinking water is another important component of a detoxification program. Water helps to keep the body hydrated while also washing toxins away. The more water you drink, the better. Ideally, you should consume a minimum of two quarts of water every day in order to achieve the best effects.

Working in these dietary changes may seem difficult at first, but modifications to a few of your favorite recipes will help you. For example, rather than using white rice, replace it with brown rice. Similarly, replace your side of potatoes with brown rice in order to reduce the carbs in your diet while also adding more fiber. By experimenting with fruits and vegetables, you can also create a number of different vegetable and fruit salads that will be both tasty and good for you.

Lifestyle Changes to Include in a Detoxification Program

In addition to making dietary changes, there are a number of lifestyle changes that should also be included in a body detoxification program. Obviously, the most important life style change you can make is to quit taking the drugs or alcohol that you are abusing. In addition, you should take steps to help reduce stress. Not only will this help with removing toxins, it will also make you less likely to resort to abusing drugs again.

One step you can take to help reduce stress and to make your body healthier is to take deep breaths. By taking deep breaths, you make it possible for oxygen to circulate more thoroughly throughout your body. As a result, your body can perform at a more effective level.

Hydrotherapy should also be added to your detoxification program. Hydrotherapy involves taking a very hot shower for about five minutes while letting the water go down your back. Then, do the same with cold water for about 30 seconds and repeat this process three times. Following the hydrotherapy session, rest in bed for about 30 minutes to help reduce stress and relax your body.

Paying Attention to Your Body with Your Detoxification Program

Reducing stress and changing your diet are not the only components to a whole body detoxification program. Creating opportunities to sweat, such as spending time in a sauna, can also help you get rid of toxins. To further aid in removing toxins through your pores, you can also dry-brush your skin or take foot baths or use detoxifying patches. Special brushes for this process can be purchased at natural products stores.

Of course, exercise is also a great way to get your body sweating. In addition, regular exercise will help make your body healthy and strong while also helping to reduce stress levels. Exercise does not necessarily have to be running several miles per day. Rather, you can find a way to get your body moving that you enjoy. Yoga, dancing, and martial arts, for example, can all help get your blood circulating while detoxifying your body. In addition, if you enjoy what you are doing, you will feel less stressed and find a hobby that will help you even further with fighting the urge to abuse drugs.

If you are having a difficult time finding a physical activity that you enjoy, you can simply try walking every day. If you find someone to walk with you, it will make your walks more enjoyable and will also help inspire you to get out there and get walking. If you don’t have anyone to walk with, consider getting a dog. Taking your pet out for walks will help get you moving and having pets has been proven to help reduce stress.

While these dietary and lifestyle changes are not going to be enough to completely beat a drug addiction, they can help return your body to good health while also helping to completely remove the residue of the drugs from your body. Of course, this type of body detoxification program is not meant to replace professional assistance with detoxification as most people that attempt to kick the habit on their own are unsuccessful. Rather, following a program such as this should be used alongside the help you receive from a professional detox center. In that way, you will be more likely to beat your drug addiction for good.
